I don't think any sport would have much of an audience if there
were no stories about wins and losses.
Participation is clearly part of the process, and those players
actually need opponents to hone their own progress to keep
better and better for the duration.
If you want to be a writer, you will also have to play the game
of better and worse through the process, but if you quit, you
lost. Practice often helps to process and gets better and even
sometimes friends, neighbors and team mates are the most
valued part of the process for your enjoyment and growth.
